The lyrics to this alternative national anthem are aspirational. Being happy in peace and harmony, respecting and looking after the land we live in, empathy, reciprocity and justice. Building the nation’s structures and honoring those who contribute to the nation’s viability and being inclusive of all Australians whatever their creed and colour.
Advance Australia FairLyrics By Arthur Hibbert. 15/06/19
Australians let us all rejoice
in peace and harmony.
The sun and stars that shine above
our land so vast and wide.
Such beauties rich and rare we love
to care respect and live.
With visions grand and just in mind
for cultures that we share.
In work and play from all the lands
advance Australia fair.
Our hearts are true and free to speak,
so, lend a helping hand.
For all the neighbours near and far,
To benefit their day,
in self-resolve and structures formed
to build for one and all.
From dreams of time and spirits past
for many creeds and hues.
That sow the seeds for hopes that last.
Advance Australia fair.
Advance Australia Fair National AnthemPeter Dodds McCormick
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts,
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then les us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
The content and symbolism of the national flag
The indigenous culture
Australian history has the oldest continuous culture on earth – the Australian Aboriginals, from 57,000 years ago. In the 21 century Aboriginal culture in Australia is a big part of our identity even though the population of Aborigines is small.
Australian history and identity are also linked to our military history. Like many nations Australia has emerged out of bloody conflict. The frontier wars, where the British invaded, and hundreds if not thousands of Aboriginals died.
From Federation, the ADF has been involved in many wars. The Boer war, the First and Second World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf, Afghanistan, Iraq and ISIL war. Approximately 100,000 Australian soldiers died because of war with the aim of protecting citizens and allies from invaders and to keep the peace, liberty and rights we have.
Artists as well as all Australian citizens have the right to express their opinions on national identity and patriotism. The Southern Cross or “Crux Australis” image has been a visual part of many flags in Australia’s history such as the British white, red and blue ensigns the Anti transportation league flag the Eureka flag and ADF flags. The Southern Cross is an essential part of Australia’s culture and identity.
The Australian Landscape
The structure and colour or form of the Australian landscape is distinctive. Some 75% of Australia’s land is flat and arid, with its red-brown earth and a little greenery. The beaches are pristinewith golden sandand sunny blue skies. The landscape is also a major feature of the aboriginal flag with its bright golden sun shape and flat horizon. To limit a new alternative flag design to the colours green and gold is too simplistic and does not portray the big picture, but these colours can be incorporated in the new design as I have with some of my designs.
Vexillography (flag design)
Vexillography can be categorised into various archetypes. The designs I am presenting are two-part horizontal with central insignia. Other archetypes are three-part vertical with a central insignia like the Canadian flag. Or a canton with a striped field like the American flag or the British radiating design. There are also colour field with central insignia designs and there are many three-part horizontal designs. Horizontal designs generally look more appealing in flight.
Flag designs should be simple in structure, shape and form. They may have several colours like the South African flag or rainbow flag. Both rely on their structure to resolve the aesthetic form.
Since British settlement a massive amount of infrastructure has been built amounting trillions of dollars, as required for a population of 25 million. The horizon line is also a metaphor for infrastructure which is generally linear such as roads, rail, the electricity grid, gas, water, sewage pipes and optical fibre.
Cultural Diversity and Solidarity
Possibly the most important qualities of a civil society are multiculturalism and social cohesion or solidarity. Empathy and knowledge of different cultural groups and individuals help us relate to one another, this concept should be consciously promoted at a national level.
By unifying the divide at the national aesthetic level between the blue ensign and the indigenous flags, I think this would help promote the unification of white, indigenous and multicultural Australians.
Currently blue ensign supporters tend to be conservative monarchists. Some are outright racist. As such the indigenous aesthetic is seen as a minority concern and not considered as important. The fact is, it’s uniquely Australian and inherently important.
One of the most visible images in the world’s media is the Australian national flag. It would be far more beneficial to Australia if the national design presented a modern multicultural independent nation to the world while simultaneously also reflecting the social cohesion to its citizens.
